Professional Poker Tour
For those who want to learn to play poker at a professional level, the epitome of experience and
skills is demonstrated by the players who are part of the tournaments and games of the Professional
Poker Tour.
The PPT Tournament was a follow up after the successful World Poker Tour with a five show series
billed as quarter finals followed by the final table with the top six players comprising the
exciting finish.
The PPT Tournament was first aired on the Travel Channel in 2006 and lasted into the 2007 season.
The poker players were by invitation only, but were restricted to those experts who had already
established a presence in the World Tour or other similar high-ranking events such as WSOP.
Although, there was considerable hoopla surrounding the announcement of the PPT Tournament location
and time, the PPT Tournament subsequently basically fizzled into oblivion.
The PPT Tournament was originally scheduled to take place at Borgata Casino in Atlantic City during
June 2005, but was postponed until 2006. In spite of all the interest being shown for Professional
Poker Tours, particularly those featuring poker professionals of the highest caliber, the
television show did not survive the initial plans for its growth and effectiveness.
Some of the PPT Tournament rules are slightly different than other amateur play, in order to make
it more exciting to the fans viewing via television. In the Professional Poker Tour there is
typically a commentator or two as well as a game expert to add information for the sake of the
viewers who are not as familiar with the Professional Poker Tour. It is difficult to be too
informative to the home viewer without either interfering with the concentration of the poker
players or providing information that makes it impossible for successful bluffing. This is such an
integral part of the poker game play that losing the ability to bluff essentially takes the
excitement and interest from the game.
The Professional Poker Tour has made some adjustments in the television coverage so that the
element of mystery provided by successful bluffing is retained. In the Professional Poker Tour,
since the card game relies on a combination of bluffing, luck and betting strategy, to remove any
of the three elements makes the game less exciting to watch and to play.
The PPT tournament second season excluded such world renowned players as Johnny Chan, Sam Farha,
Phil Gordon and others. The reason for exclusion was that they had not played a sufficient number
of the previous PPT tournament events and WPT events.
Other world class PPT tournament games have been arranged and played by many of the top players.
These masters of the game must be invited to participate in the high level tournaments. Television
has been the reason for increased interest in the card game in the United State and throughout
Europe. Only the poker best players are invited to participate in the Professional Poker Tour,
often sponsored by the casinos of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. For the ordinary recreational player
it is highly interesting to watch the experts competing for $100,000 or higher stakes in the top
games. One can even learn good poker tricks and techniques by paying close attention to the
strategy at the Professional Poker Tour.
