Best Player’s in History of Hold’em
Poker professionals are professionals for a reason, they win often. This however does not
necessarily mean that they are the best in poker over time. Many armatures come out of nowhere to
become one of the best in poker. Ultimately, this means that there are really no best poker
professionals in history but rather some players that end up winning more often than others at one
particular time. One player may be on top one year only to never be heard from again.
Watching televised play to see the best in poker
One of the reasons that people are interested in the best in poker is because it has become so
popular on television. An avid player or somebody that just happens to be board can tune into a
televised event sponsored by the World Series of Poker. In most instances, they see many of the
same faces tournament after tournament. The fans watching begin to think that the people that they
see often are the top poker professionals. They may be the crowd favorites to be sure, but just
because they are seen often doesn’t mean they are among the top players. They just happen to be
better at tournament play and can afford the high cost of “buying in” to the tournament.
A satellite system
Most of the tournaments that are seen on television involve winning at satellite tables. These
tables’ spawn top players that then move on to play with the winners of other tables to become best
in poker. This ultimately means that anybody could be the best player on that particular day and
move on when one of the people you see regularly does not. The top players simply have better odds
because they have played a lot more of the tournaments as poker professionals.
The best in poker televised players
The best televised poker professionals at this particular moment are: Dan Harrington, Mike Matusow
and Phil Ivey. They have been at the best in poker for a bit but are just as likely not to be there
for much longer. Fame and luck can sometimes be fleeting. If the same question were to be asked six
month ago or six months from now the answer will very likely not include the names just mentioned
in the ‘best in poker’ list.
Top players for cash
In all likelihood, the top players will be found at the cash tables. These top players are there to
just make money, day in and day out. They either don’t care for tournament play or are not all that
interested in it because it takes time away from their cash play. One of the reasons you will not
find particular names for the best poker players is because their measure is in cash returns. These
top players are familiar with the winners in their particular region or town but from a world
perspective it is unlikely that the best are ever really known. If a 2007 list were to be
generated it would include: Jamie Gold $12 million, Jo Hachem $10 million and Jerry Yang $8 million
as poker professionals.
Cash verses tournament for poker professionals
The biggest difficulty in measuring cash players and tournament players is the ongoing exchange of
cash versus bettering with a finite amount of chips. A cash player is well financed and prepared to
ride out the variances in poker by spending the cash they have. A tournament player ultimately just
loses if they hit a variation in the odds and doesn’t have the chips to ride it through. The best
tournament television top players are definitely poker professionals but not likely the best.
